Chipotle Mexican Grill Colorado Growth
The Mile High City has been a rising star in the last twenty years. With unprecedented and consistent growth in population and industry, the city has become one of the larger markets in the United States. Denver commercial real estate has come in high demand, with more and more businesses deciding to centralize their operations in Denver. Chipotle Mexican Grill, one of the foremost names in the Mexican fast food industry, has made a name for itself with clever business strategies and an auspicious use of brand loyalty.
Steve Ells, Chipotle’s founder, opened the first Chipotle restaurant near the University of Denver campus in 1993. Upon opening, Ells calculated that he would need to sell 107 burritos a day to remain profitable. Within a month, the restaurant began selling roughly 1,000 burritos a day. The impressive cash flow lead to Ells rapidly expanding the company across Colorado. By 1999, there were 16 restaurants across the state, and a subsequent restaurant opening in Minneapolis. The company’s success caught the eye of McDonald’s Corporation, who took a minor stake in the company allowing it to become the culinary behemoth it has become today.
Chipotle’s business centers on the Chipotle burrito, which is based off of the mission burritos that became popular in the San Francisco area in the 1980’s. A mission burrito differed from a regular burrito in that it would contain extra ingredients, making it a far more filling burrito. Chipotle’s burrito has become so popular, as of 2009 it is consistently in America’s top growing franchises. Part of the appeal in the restaurant is that customers are allowed to watch their food get prepared right before their eyes, and choose their ingredients as they go. This style of giving customers more control over what they are ordering is a big part of why Chipotle has picked up the kind of brand loyalty as it has.
As a very successful Denver franchise, other companies have followed suit by basing their operations in the Denver-area. Chipotle partnered up with Boulder full-service restaurant Pizzeria Locale to start a pizza fast food chain in Denver with the same name in May 2013. The aim is to expand the restaurant across Colorado in the same vain as Chipotle.
